Swim: Extra Alcatraz
Popular lore has it that Alcatraz is a difficult swim. And it probably was if you were a prison inmate who couldn’t swim, and who didn’t understand the tides and currents.
But if you have a good pilot who can time it right, it’s usually a manageable 1.25-1.5 mile swim from the south tip of the island to the San Francisco shoreline.
Sometimes people are looking for a little extra. So we jump at the north end of the island and swim along the picturesque shoreline to the south tip before making the crossing. This makes for a very pleasant first leg of the swim, and brings the total distance up to about 2miles.
