Building a Village with Habitat for Humanity in Nicaragua
I’ve long since been a fan of Habitat for Humanity since my friend Dave went to Columbia in 2004 and single-handedly built a village. Last year, I found myself able to make a contribution too, and helped put together a team to adopt a project in Nicaragua. Together we raised over $35,000 from friends, family and colleagues to help finance the project which covered the full costs of 10 new homes.
I’ve put together into a short documentary pulled from some footage I shot when I visited the project and worked for a week alongside the local community. It’s a bit long and my narration is awful, but there’s a nice ending!
You too can have a similar experience. Habitat’s Global Village volunteer program provides opportunities to volunteer in over 50 countries around the world. In the US, there are also Habitat affiliates in most cities, and there are plenty of projects where you can turn up and build for a day or a whole season.
It was my first build, too, and I simply loved it. Family, frndies and strangers coming together for a great cause was very emotional to me. Especially, since it was Labor Day Weekend and all gave up that time off to help our family Love, Mom
